SEO migration
An SEO migration preserves continuity between old addresses, new content and the signals sent to search engines.
This guide helps you choose a next step.
Inventory, URL mapping, redirects, checks and monitoring: the essential steps for a controlled SEO migration.
Build the inventory before the change
Combine the sitemap, crawl, page views, queries, backlinks and older URL lists. No single tool provides a complete history. Mark active pages, existing redirects, removals and URLs that external sources can still discover.
Create a precise URL map
Every old URL needs a decision: keep it, redirect it to a genuinely equivalent page or retire it explicitly. Topic and intent proximity matter. Sending everything to the homepage creates a poor experience and may be treated as a soft error.
Prepare the new site signals
Canonicals, hreflang, internal links, sitemaps, structured data and robots rules must point to final destinations. Avoid redirect chains and internal links that still pass through an old address.
Validate before and after the switch
Test priority pages, forms, assets, error codes and several viewport sizes in an environment close to production. After the switch, recrawl old and new lists, then review server logs and Search Console.
Keep evidence and a rollback path
Archive the URL map, completed checks and deployed version. An atomic switch with rollback reduces incident time. Monitoring should distinguish normal fluctuation from a reproducible technical defect.
