Understand an SEO audit

A useful SEO audit connects each finding to a URL, evidence, a possible impact and a verifiable action. It separates blockers from optimisations.

This guide helps you choose a next step.

What an SEO audit should verify, how to read priorities and what evidence to request before starting remediation.

Check access and indexability

The audit reviews HTTP status codes, robots.txt, meta directives, canonicals, sitemaps and language variants. A page can be available to a visitor while sending the wrong signal to a search engine. Findings should therefore cite the observed responses and tags.

Review structure and content

Titles, descriptions, H1s, click depth, internal links, duplicates and page intent are assessed together. Word count alone cannot judge a page: its purpose, specificity, evidence and answer to the search need matter more.

Measure experience and performance

Laboratory tests provide a repeatable scenario; field data describes real users. LCP, INP and CLS should be read at the 75th percentile when field data exists. Without it, the audit should state the limitation clearly.

Validate structured data

JSON-LD should describe what the page visibly contains. Syntax validation does not guarantee a rich result. Types, identifiers, breadcrumbs, author and dates must remain consistent with the page and the site entity.

Turn the report into a plan

A high priority should represent a significant risk or opportunity, rather than an arbitrary tool score. The plan identifies order, dependencies, verification and the items that require access to Search Console, analytics or commercial data.
